The Pitch

Akron is one of the few clubs in the Union to own its Rugby pitch.  This was made possible by the tireless effort and generous contributions of the Old Boys.
Directions (Click on map to link to Mapquest)

From I-77, take the V. Odem Blvd. exit.  Head west on V. Odem Blvd.  Pass Primo's Deli on the right and bear to the right.  V. Odem Blvd. turns into Wadsworth Road after you pass Collier Road.  After you pass Warren Avenue, the enterance to the Akron RFC Pitch is located on the right hand side immediately past Carter Lumber (1763 Wadsworth Road) and beneath the billboard sign.

History of the Pitch

The field land was discovered in 1994. It had been a nursery at one time, but at that time we found the land, it was covered with large piles of fill dirt, concrete and asphalt. After some negotiations with the  owner, the land was purchased for a reasonable price that included some bulldozing work.

There were several years of tree cutting, and additional bulldozing work done to get a field area made. Finally, a heavy equipment operator's school came in and used the field as a training area and basically did all of the final heavy grading work for the cost of the fuel. There were many field work days spent picking up rocks, raking, fixing culverts, and preparing the grounds until it was finally seeded in 1998.

The first several field mowings consisted of about twelve guys using push mowers for hours. The field markers were laid out and goal posts installed and the first game was played in the fall of 1999.  The back entrance on the railroad land was aquired in 2004.  Clearing the railroad land was another several work days.

Grounds Expansion

We need your help. A 2.5 parcel of land adjoining our rugby grounds has come available for sale. With guidance from Ed Muse, we negotiated a sales agreement to purchase the land for $28,000. This is an opportunity we must take advantage of but are lacking funding to do so. Currently, GARF’s balance is $4,800. We can complete the deal through loans being offered by Fred Warmbrodt and Homeless but that mortgages our future. Recently the Foundation for Akron Rugby, GARF (Greater Akron Area Foundation) was able to build a new pavilion on our property thanks to donations from the Bisconti family/friends, a few Old Boys who made significant contributions, and labor supplied by Abe Brunner with help from Fred Warmbrodt, Don Kline, John Cetnarowski, Rob Annen, Randy Humbert and others who contributed time and skill. The results are impressive.

This is a tremendous opportunity that can help us to take rugby in the area to the next level. Having the land will enable us to host tournaments, have an available practice field, and better support high school rugby our feeder system. We are looking for any donations you can provide but need them by mid-October to close the deal. Several Old Boys have already pledged $500 or $1,000 but we need much more. Remember, your donations are tax deductible.

Donations of $500 or greater will have their names engraved on the memorial stone located adjacent to the rugby pitch.
