Spring 2005 Old Boys Match

The Spring 2005 Old Boys game was the first time in recorded history that the current Men's team defeated the Old Boys side. The Old Boys saw their best turnout ever with more than 40 old men showing up, ready to play.  The previous 3 years (2004, 2003, and 2002) were extremely competitive games and the Old Boys margin of victory was slim, 3 points or less in each of those games.  The Old Boys Game of 2005 was the year the Akron Men's Side would get it's revenge.

Akron held the lead for most of the game, but the Old Boys closed to within one point late in the second half. With less than five minutes remaining, the Old Boys had the ball and were moving down the field, when Akron Flyhalf Jamie Keeney stripped the ball from an Old Boy back and streaked into the try zone for the back breaking try.

Old Boy legend Tom Juszli officially retired from rugby and was honored by young and old with a signed rugby ball and t-shirt, and a tear-jerking speech from Kevin Matuska.  We had a great party after the game. Jeff Perkins brought his portable spit, and we cooked many pounds of meat for everyone to enjoy. After the party, many of the ruggers and their families camped out at the field and the bon-fire burned all night.  A great time was had by all.

History

The Akron Old Boys were established in 1994 by Fred Warmbrodt, the Captain of the former senior side team. Fred called the side together to play in the Ohio Fifteens, Old Boys Division. More than 30 players responded to the calling, with the only criteria being that they were 35 years of age and older.

That weekend, Akron easily won the first two matches, placing them in the Sunday finals against their old nemesis, Sciotto Valley. Akron would once again prevail by winning 12-10 on a late try. The championship was the first of five in a row with the latest coming in early April 1998. A frustrated Cincinnati Wolfhounds, who have been bested each of the previous four years by Akron, met in the finals. Akron assumed an early lead with Cincinnati closing the gap late in the second half. With time running out, the Wolfhounds scored a try and converted to close within a single point. Following the kickoff and obtaining possession of the ball, the Wolfhounds were charging down the field when time had expired.

The Old Boys have traveled to Lake Placid, New York and Seven Springs, Pennsylvania to play in tournaments over the last three years. Although the results were not as strong as the Ohio finish, Akron managed impressive showings in all but one of the tournaments. Most recently, the Old Boys went on a tour to New Zealand.

To this day, the Akron Old Boys are a core piece of Akron's continued success as a competitive men's side. We continue to see 4-5 Old Boys at all of our practices and even find one or two active Old Boys competing for A-side positions.
