The Pitch

Akron is one of the few clubs in the Union to own its Rugby pitch.  This was made possible by the tireless effort and generous contributions of the Old Boys.                    (See Pitch from Space:  A Pitch Odyssey)

History of the Pitch

The field land was discovered in 1994. It had been a nursery at one time, but at that time we found the land, it was covered with large piles of fill dirt, concrete and asphalt. After some negotiations with the  owner, the land was purchased for a reasonable price that included some bulldozing work.

There were several years of tree cutting, and additional bulldozing work done to get a field area made. Finally, a heavy equipment operator's school came in and used the field as a training area and basically did all of the final heavy grading work for the cost of the fuel. There were many field work days spent picking up rocks, raking, fixing culverts, and preparing the grounds until it was finally seeded in 1998.

The first several field mowings consisted of about twelve guys using push mowers for hours. The field markers were laid out and goal posts installed and the first game was played in the fall of 1999.  The back entrance on the railroad land was aquired in 2004.  Clearing the railroad land was another several work days.
