Men's Season Recap

AP/BBC. Akron Rugby Club War room, Ohio. The coaching staff of the Midwest Division III Akron Rugby Football Club had it's post season press conference late today (11/03/2005) and as far as this reporter could tell the outlook was mostly pleased. The men from the Rubber City did not start well, dropping their scrimmage in a closely fought contest and then coming out flat against eventual division champs Eastern Suburbs and suffering their worst loss of the season. "After that pitiful showing I was worried that these guys were out there just going through the motions" said coach Dan Leslie, "luckily we did not let the next loss break us" he added referring to the Erie comeback that broke the spirit of many a fan in the second game of the fall campaign. That loss would mark the low point of the year and after it was put in the rear view mirror Akron would not see the loss column again. Winning 3 road games and beating nationally ranked Cleveland Rovers at home in a thriller.  Akron finished 4 - 2 and will have to see if it's 19 points are enough to squeak them into the 16 team Midwest tourney. The team had a good mix of young talent and veteran savvy with several first year players seeing some significant A side time. It also had a committed core of "young bucks" who greatly enhanced practice and the B side fixtures. Some stats from the season:

Most points: Macmullin - 59
Most Tries: MacMullin, Kapusta tie - 4
Most Sin Bin Minutes: Kevin - 40
Most Broken: Langenbeck
Light Heavyweight Champ: TJ
Hungriest: Perko
Quitters: Abe, Dom, Gules
Un Quitter: Gilbert

The team had 5 members who missed less than 10 minutes of game time all season. The Ironmen are Cheese, Spicoli (Capt.), Racin, Doc and Kapusta.
